Writer's Digest Writing Competition

This anthology includes all the winning pieces for the 2009 Writer’s Digest national writing competition plus a piece I wrote for Smithsonian called “Condors in a Coal Mine” that was the year’s grand prize.

The Best of Novel Advice

For a couple of years, I had great fun writing a monthly column for Novel Advice. Two of these columns are included in this collection

Writer's Market

This piece for Writer’s Market was a case of being in the right place at the right time. After winning an award at a writer’s conference, I was approached by the Writer’s Market editor asking if I’d like to write for them. I thought a moment and asked, “How about something on the pleasures and perils of participating in a writing group?” It was one of the easiest pieces I’ve ever sold.

Just in Case

This guide to dealing to emergencies—from earthquakes to hurricanes to blackouts—was my first book. Stewart Brand wrote a blurb. So did Ralph Nader. I still remember when it arrived, and I held it in my hands. A nice moment.
