"A Second Chance at Second Sight"

I wrote my first story at age ten—a sci-fi tale about a band of explorers marooned on Venus desperate to save Earth from attacking aliens. I laboriously hunt-and-pecked the four-page story on a Smith Corona portable typewriter. When I finished, I felt a rush of exhilaration. Since that first attempt at creation, so much has changed. I have spent several decades improving my craft (and am still learning), and I now write mostly narrative nonfiction about the environment. But one thing remains the same: the thrill of putting words together and creating something from nothing. It is not easy, but when it works, it is nothing short of magical.
