Love Letters Project Logo

Nine Santa Cruz authors participated in The Love Letters Project on Saturday, February 11th, held at The Musuem of Art and History (MAH), Bookshop Santa Cruz, and Felix Kulpa Gallery. Each writer was asked to contribute a poem or letter they had written for someone or something they love. The poems and letters written by Wallace Baine at The Love Letters Project follow his contribution.

Quatrains by Wallace Baine

I’m going to do more running
I’m going to eat more spinach
Because you should have Brad Pitt
And I’m more like Dennis Kucinich.

***

Let’s take a trip, a romantic retreat
Think of all the things we’ll discover
I’m thrilled to spend my hours with you
Now that football season is over.

***

I watch you when you’re sleeping
I hear you singing in the bath
I hope one day we’ll officially meet
So you can see I’m no psychopath.

***

I want you more than food, or air, or any other woman
No matter how gorgeous or scantily clad
There is nothing I desire more than your love, my pet
Well ... OK, maybe an iPad.

***

It’s your day to be pampered and made a fuss o’er
I love you more than I can say
Tonight I insist on making you dinner
Is Lucky Charms and toast OK?

***

To me, you are the air I breathe
Runneth over does my cup
Please remember that I would die for you
The next time I leave the toilet seat up.

***

Since you’ve come into my life
I’ve had no trouble with the law
No whoring, or drinking, but one question, my dear:
Can we make an exception for Mardi Gras?

***

I don’t know how to buy you flowers
They seem like such a waste
Can’t I just confess I still burn for you,
And skip all the bad taste?

***

My rhymes are imperfect, the meter’s all wrong
My humor often falls flat
The truth, my love, is that my life starts with you
And nothing really rhymes with that.

He has won national awards for his columns, and is the host and creator of the Gail Rich Awards, honoring artists and arts supporters. He is the author of the collection "Rhymes With Vain." He likes saying "Mozambique" and gets really weird when he's carrying more than $20 in his pocket.
