Love Letters Project Logo

Nine Santa Cruz authors participated in The Love Letters Project on Saturday, February 11th, held at The Musuem of Art and History (MAH), Bookshop Santa Cruz, and Felix Kulpa Gallery. Each writer was asked to contribute a poem or letter they had written for someone or something they love. The poems and letters written by Neal Hellman at The Love Letters Project follow his contribution.

She Awakes Before Me

There is a song in the morning and the song is you
I hear your voice in the shower singing Beatle songs
“Please, Please Me” while you shampoo
“Love Me Do” during the rinse.
There is a new melody as you pull the brush through your hair
Followed by the sounds of your jeans
Sliding up your long, pale and beautiful legs.
Before you leave, your lips touch my face
Your hand rests gently on my cheek
Then a warm voice assuring me of your return
These are our mornings
This is how we start the day.

Neal Hellman has been a writing student of the poet Ellen Bass for the past eight years. Many of his short stories are seen through the eyes of an eight year old growing up on New York’s lower east side. His works have been featured in The Porter Gulch Review and in The Rose, a spiritual magazine published in Athens, Georgia. Neal has been writing books of arrangements for the mountain dulcimer since 1974. His work has been published by Mel Bay, Hal Leonard and the Richmond Organization. He is currently completing a new book of arrangements for Hal Leonard titled Music of the World for Mountain Dulcimer. Neal is also the founder, director and one of the primary artists of Gourd Music, and has produced over forty albums, including Simple Gifts, Jefferson’s Fiddle and Emma’s Waltz. Many of the Gourd tracks have found their way to film and television.
