phren-Z would like to congratulate the winner of the first Morton Marcus Memorial Poetry Contest: David Sulllivan. David's entry, "Take Wing," won the $1,000 first prize, as selected through a blind competition by judge Al Young. David will read an excerpt of "Take Wing" at the Morton Marcus Memorial Reading at Cabrillo College on Saturday, November 10 at 7:00 pm.(Learn more about the reading at the Morton Marcus web site.)

David Sullivan DAVID SULLIVAN’s first book, Strong-Armed Angels, was published by Hummingbird Press, and two of its poems were read by Garrison Keillor on The Writer’s Almanac. Every Seed of the Pomegranate, a multi-voiced manuscript about the war in Iraq, is forthcoming in June, 2012 from Tebot Bach. He teaches at Cabrillo College, where he edits the Porter Gulch Review, and lives in Santa Cruz with his love, the historian Cherie Barkey, and their two children, Jules and Mina Barivan.

phren-Z looks forward to the launch of our Fall 2012 issue on Thursday, November 15th, completing a cycle of four quarterly issues in our first year of publishing. Watch for new fiction, nonfiction, and poetry from Santa Cruz County authors, and publication of the winning and runner-up entries of the Morton Marcus Memorial Poetry Contest.

In addition to the online launch, we're happy to announce a Live Reading at the Museum of Art & History on First Friday, December 7 from 5:00 to 6:30 pm. The reading will feature the following contributors to the Fall 2012 issue as well as the winner of the poetry contest:
