Nothing

Allegra-
Burt-

The  couple sit on a porch swing. Evening time.

Long silence…then

A
What did you just say?

B
Nothing.

A
I heard you say something.

B
No….. I didn’t.

A
I must be hearing things.

B
There wasn’t anything to hear.
I didn’t say a word. …………Nothing.

A
Okay………….. If you say so.

B
I didn’t say “so”.
I was quiet.
I said I didn’t say anything.
Must have been the swing creaking.

(pause)

A
That’s just a saying- “if you say so”

B
Okay…… .……
But, you know,  sayings often mean nothing.

A
Sayings say a lot.
Sometimes they’ re a shortcut to everything.

B
You can’t get to “everything”…….not ever.

A
Well, the “essence” of everything, at least.
(pause)

B
They do get to something

A
What?

B
 Sometimes they get to something.

What do?

B
Sayings

A
No, I know you mean sayings,
but what do they get to?
What are somethings?

B
Like this.

A
 This?

B
This

A
  This is “something?”

B
You bet!

A
What did you say?

B
You Bet !!

A
“You bet” is a good saying.
I like it.
To me it means everything.

B.
See what I mean?

A
I’m not sure.

B
I meant it to mean everything.
This…sitting here like this…it’s really something.
And to me that’s pretty close to everything.

I love that you said that.

B
I love that you said that you love that I said that.

A
Sometimes, something is not nothing much.

B
Right!

A
And not just something, but everything.

B
 Right.
You can’t get to everything
but you can get to everything important in the moment .

A
 Valuable………
(pause)

B
 Precious……..

(pause)

A
 Wonderful…….

B
This moment!!

A
Oops! It just passed !

B
Yes. I felt it pass.

A.
But wait.

B.
Why?

  (pause)

A.
Just wait!!

(pause)

Here comes another one.

B.

Got it!!
